Nepal Water Expo

Introduction:

Since time immemorial, water has been the detrimental factor in human settlement. In the present context of understanding and scientific & technological advancement too, water is an undeniably important component of human life and environmental integrity. With the diversification of human endeavors, the demand for clean, pure and natural water is increasing day by day. As there is only limited amount of accessible usable water in the globe, and the hydrological cycle adds to this only the limited amount, water is increasingly becoming the stress factor and prospective cause of human conflict. For the wise management of this precious natural resource, we need to redefine the values, importance and uses of water.

The motto of World Water Day 2012 is “Food and Water Security”. To get enough clean water is everyone’s birthright. Water is needed not only for drinking and washing, rather in every aspect of human life. How to secure this right has become a great challenge. Both water haves and not haves should consider themselves to be the members of one global family and conscientiously and responsibly make wise use, share, recycle and conserve water. Nepal Water Expo 2012 is all about the sustainable good use of water for my welfare, for our welfare, for nation’s welfare and for the welfare of whole humanity.

In one hand, we need to explore the possible new sources of water for the ever widening demands, in the other hand, attempts should continue to reduce the wastage, pollution and over exploitation of water, reuse and recycle the wastewater and to conserve water for posterity. Nepal Water Expo 2012 has been designed to accommodate the exhibition of all the modern scientific and technological development in those areas.

Rationale:

Nepal is said to be the second country in the world which is rich in water resource, which comes from the mighty Himalayan Range and hydropower is the major source of electricity in the country. However, the vast amount of water source has not been used in Nepal and this is visible through the load shedding that the country is experiencing for how many years now. What are the obstacles for providing 100% of this resource that we are boasting that we are rich at?

Moreover, water is a renewable resource, yet the supply of clean, fresh water is steadily decreasing especially in Kathmandu. The demand of clean water already exceeds the supply in many parts of Kathmandu City and as the population in the capital continues to rise, so does the water demand. So, what went wrong?

Furthermore, because of visionless actions, the rivers in Kathmandu have become the easiest sites of waste and wastewater disposal transforming them into useless places. This should not happen in other part of the country. Now if we are talking about new prosperous Nepal, we need to make the Kathmandu river system centers of recreation, peace, beauty and tourism. We have to resurrect them as the heart of new modern civilization. If this is the vision of one person, it will be impossible; however, if all the Nepalese people make this vision as their own, then the dream can come true in the shortest possible time.

Though there have been efforts at individual, family, societal, organizational and national levels to restore the rivers but these efforts have not been able to impart any visible impact so far. This might be due to isolated approaches without having any synergic or cumulative effects upon each other.

Furthermore, most of these efforts have been carried out without any research, supports, suggestions and inclusion of the experts. So, it is now high time to expose all those endeavors to everybody’s knowledge and inspire everyone to take ownership over the dream. Further, the public should also be informed about the new possibilities that each individual, household, institution or the nation can initiate for the purpose.

Hence, River of Peace Campaign (RoPC), an initiative of GPA Nepal and Direction Nepal have teamed up to bring all the concerned institutions, experts, individuals and government agencies together to organize, for the first time, ‘Nepal Water Expo 2012. It is to make the people, institutions and government agencies recognize all sorts of uses, importance and values of water as a whole at one site and inform the general public on how human negligence and irresponsibility have transformed beauty into ugly, resources into useless and natural into artificial entities. This might generate deep feeling in responsible people for the immediate ownership and appropriate actions from individual to government level.
